A big part was analysing a game and figuring out why a mechanic didn't work in terms of player engagement
My chosen mechanic was Balan Wonderworld's costume mechanic since it was critiqued about being too simple as well as lacking depth
The problem with costumes is that they only ever have 1 action associated with them as a pose to usually 2, a unique action and a jump like in Mario.
The Costume Mechanic in Balan was what I chose to develop and improve
I created a power known as the Ice Empress, similar powers to the Frost Fairy. A power that can create platforms, to reach greater heights
In the prototype a few different scenarios to do with both buttons that move platforms and platforming puzzles are used to obtain jewels and clear the level
This was done in an effort to improve the player engagement of the game which was in my research shown to be pretty low
This was due to the game not following conditions for achieving flow like setting clear goals and adequately challenging the player
This was measured with the FSS-2 scale to prove through data that it is in fact more engaging than the original
